What you need to know about HDTV.

Where is HDTV standing for?

HDTV stands for ‘High Definition’ tv and means that the screen has more pixels and thus more details than a normal TV ‘Standard Definition’ or SD). The standard signal (PAL) for analogue and digital televisions has a resolution of 720 x 576 screenpoints (pixels); at a HD TV is this 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 pixels, respectively 2 and 5 times more detail yields. In other words: HDTV is super sharp.

HD-ready

The HD Ready logo indicates that an tv can display HD images correctly. This is an official logo indicating that the apparatus meets certain requirements. Thus, for example, the screen must have a minimum of 720 scanning lines in widescreen format.

Full HD

There are flat screen TV’s with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. These TV’s are called Full HD. this is not the official appellation, but the manufacturers put often self the logo’s on the TV’s. More and more TVs are Full HD, also in the smaller screen sizes such as 32 inches. Main question here remains or higher resolution can be observed. That depends on the size of the screen, the viewing distance and the sharpness of the own vision. This is not easy to try in a shop. You should look at the same images (In the highest resolution) at both HD Ready and Full HD TV of the same size. While the viewing distance you have at home, or the intention to observe.

HD-ready 1080p

There is an official logo for TV’s that can handle the highest HD format: “HD-ready 1080p”. This logo is an extension of the earlier “HD ready” logo. Even with this logo are there certain requirements. It is not true that every HD TV always meet these requirements, although that is less and less. And there are HD Ready TV’s wich can also handle the 1080p signal, but convert to a signal that matches to the lower resolution of the screen.

No HDTV ready logo on the Full HD TV? Always ask whether the television meets the requirements.
